UKRAINIAN STUDENTS HOPE FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE

A film by Dean Love

Despite daily air raids, drones and missile launches, a powerful new documentary is set to illuminate an extraordinary story of resilience and hope, showcasing the unbreakable spirit of those who refuse to be defeated by conflict. A team from Astronomy for Equity (A4E) is traveling to Ukraine to deliver telescopes to students in war-torn areas, transforming the darkness of conflict and blackouts into a gateway for discovery and wonder.

Since the start of the war, Ukraine has endured widespread power outages, leaving entire cities in darkness. Yet, amidst the hardship, astronomy students found an unexpected silver lining—beneath the darkened skies, the stars shone more brilliantly than ever. Inspired by this, they reached out to A4E, hoping for telescopes that would allow them to explore the universe despite the challenges surrounding them.

Now, the A4E team is answering that call. They will visit schools that received telescopes in 2023 through their partner Earthlings Hub, deliver additional telescopes donated by Explore Scientific and Baader Planetarium, provide astronomy lessons, and share stargazing experiences.

This journey will be captured by Dean Love Films, bringing to life a story of perseverance and inspiration. Through the eyes of these students, the documentary will showcase the transformative power of astronomy—a reminder that even in the darkest times, the night sky offers a beacon of hope, curiosity, and connection to something greater. It is a testament to resilience, courage, and the unbreakable bond between humanity and the cosmos.

"I am Yasia. I am Katia. I am Sasha. I am Myroslav. I am Ella.

We are extremely passionate about stellar observations. The power often goes out here and we can see the stars clearly. But, to see objects well we need a telescope and we hope that adults can help us to get one. We will then be able to create an astronomy club in our community.

Together to the stars!"
